Ajax Council approves new three ward system
Change will take effect for 2018 municipal election

Recently, Ajax Council approved a new three ward system for the Town of Ajax. The change ensures fair and equitable representation for residents and will come into effect for the 2018 municipal election.

The Town will be moving from its current four ward system to a three ward system in order to make room for the additional seat on Durham Regional Council that will be granted to Ajax beginning in 2018.

The size of Ajax Council will not change, and will move from:

  • Four local councillors
  • Two regional councillors
  • The Mayor

To:

  • Three local councillors
  • Three regional councillors
  • The Mayor

QUOTE

“The Town committed to ensuring that a fair, easy to understand boundary system would be in place for 2018. After an extensive ward boundary review, public consultation process and peer review, the selected boundary configuration both respects the guiding principles, and reflects resident feedback.”

Alexander Harras, Deputy Clerk

QUICK FACTS

- A ward is an identifiable geographic area in Ajax that is represented by a local and regional member of Council.

- Guiding principles used to determine Ajax’s new ward system include representation by population, anticipating future population trends, protection of communities of interest and neighbourhoods, and using physical features (i.e. major roads) as natural boundaries.

- The new ward boundaries will be in place for the 2018 Municipal and School Board Elections, pending no appeals to the Ontario Municipal Board.
