Severe thunderstorms can leave residential homes and neighborhoods without power due to downed trees and power lines. During extended power outages, residents must take extra care when using alternative lighting, cooking and heating equipment.

Electrically connected smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms that do not have battery back-up will not work when the power is out.

QUOTES

“Many homes have electrically connected smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms that do not have battery back-up. In order to protect yourself during a power outage, it is recommended that homeowners have electrically connected smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms with battery back-up or additional battery operated smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms to provide early warning of fire and carbon monoxide. During a power outage, families should make sure electric stove elements and small appliances are OFF or unplugged to prevent fires from starting when the electricity is restored.

QUICK FACTS

  • Use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns instead of candles or hurricane lamps. If using candles, place them in a secure holder and cover them with a glass chimney.
  • Cordless phones will not work when the power is out, so it is recommended to have at least one phone that does not require electricity to operate.
  • Propane and charcoal barbecues as well as emergency power generators are for outdoor use only. The exhaust from these devices creates carbon monoxide. DO NOT bring them inside.
  • Everyone should know how to get out immediately if there is a fire. Prepare and practice a home fire escape plan.
  • The Ontario Fire Code requires working smoke alarms to be installed on every storey of your home and outside all sleeping areas. This includes cottages, cabins and recreational vehicles.
  • The Ontario Fire Code requires carbon monoxide alarm(s) to be installed adjacent to all sleeping areas in dwellings with a fuel-burning appliance or fireplace.
