About the Event
Join the Durham Family Cultural Centre, the Town of Ajax, and the City of Pickering as we commemorate Emancipation Day aboard the Underground Freedom Train, hosted by Blackhurst Cultural Centre and the TTC.
More than a subway ride, this symbolic journey honours the legacy of the Underground Railroad and celebrates the resilience, freedom, and enduring strength of African-descended communities. Together, we reflect on our shared history while welcoming Emancipation Day.
Beginning on the evening of July 31, participants will travel by bus from the Ajax Community Centre to the Yonge subway line northbound, arriving as August 1—Emancipation Day— begins at midnight.

Performances are free and take place rain or shine, moving indoors during inclement weather (Ajax Community Centre - HMS Community Hall OR Ice Pad 2). Admission for indoor seating is on a first come, first served basis. Announcements, locations and updates will be provided on Town of Ajax social media channels after 5 p.m.
