As families head to beaches, pools, cottages and lakes this summer, Ajax Fire and Emergency Services is reminding residents that water safety begins with preparation and supervision. Spending time around the water is a great way to enjoy the season, but taking a few simple precautions can help prevent emergencies and keep everyone safe.
Children should always be actively supervised whenever they are near water, even in shallow areas. Designating a responsible adult to watch children without distractions, such as phones or other activities, is one of the most effective ways to reduce risk. Around the home, backyard pools should be secured with appropriate fencing, self-closing gates and locked access points.
Before you head out on the water, take a few minutes to prepare. Check the weather forecast and water conditions before leaving. Tell a friend or family member where you’re going and when you plan to return. Bring all the necessary safety equipment, including properly fitted lifejackets or personal flotation devices. Never use substances while boating so everyone can enjoy a safe day on the water. Whether enjoying a canoe, kayak, paddleboard or boat, planning ahead helps everyone return home safely.
