Last week, crews from Ajax Fire and Emergency Services responded to a reported structure fire in the north end of town. The fire, which originated in the kitchen oven, was detected early thanks to working smoke alarms inside the home.
When the alarms sounded, the family acted quickly and calmly. They evacuated immediately and went outside to call 9-1-1. Firefighters arrived promptly and were able to contain the fire. Thanks to the early alert and quick action, everyone in the household made it out safely and no injuries were reported.
The family’s preparation — including properly maintained smoke alarms and an escape plan — played a critical role in ensuring this positive outcome.
The Ajax Fire Department reminds residents that fires can grow quickly, especially in kitchens. Early detection and a clear plan can save lives.
“This is exactly why we stress the importance of working smoke alarms and having an escape plan. Smoke alarms give you those critical early moments to get out safely. This family did everything right — they heard the alarm, got out immediately and called 9-1-1 from a safe location. Their actions made all the difference.”
