The Town is conducting a comprehensive review of our Official Plan, as required by the Planning Act. This process will guide the vision of a municipality with respect to land use for the next 25 years, align the Ajax Official Plan with Provincial policies and combine both the Regional and Ajax Official Plans into a single, unified document.
The Official Plan Review is being completed in phases to ensure a thorough assessment of legislative and policy changes, while allowing for ongoing public consultation. The work is organized into the following key themes:
- Growth Management Policy Review
- Commercial and Employment Land Strategy
- General and Cultural Heritage Policy Review
- Climate Resilience and Greenlands System Policy Review
- Secondary Plans and Planning Study Areas
The Town is currently working on Phase 1: Background Research, Legislation and Policy Assessment of the Official Plan Review. Visit the project’s IMO page to review the background reports that have been released to date.

- The Official Plan is a Municipality’s primary long range planning document which identifies the principles, goals, and policies that guide the vision of a municipality with respect to land use for the next 25 years, while implementing matters of Provincial and Regional interest. The current Official Plan is available here.
- The new Region of Durham Official Plan (Envision Durham) also applies to Ajax and will be integrated into the updated Ajax Official Plan. Envision Durham is available online here.
- The last Ajax Official Plan Review concluded in 2014. Over the last 12 years there have been significant changes in the planning policy and legislative environment. In this period there have been many amendments to the Planning Act and to Provincial planning policy documents, including the Greenbelt Plan in 2017, and the new Provincial Planning Statement in 2024. During this Official Plan Review, the Ajax Official Plan will be brought into conformity with Provincial Plans and legislation.
